Halloween issue

The TUHSC Police Department wishes you a safe and happy Halloween. When celebrating this October 31st please remember these safety tips:

Instead of combustibles use alternate sources of light such as electric or “glow sticks.”

Costumes should be short enough to avoid tripping. Masks should have large eyeholes, and not slip around. Painted faces are preferable. Choose costumes that are bright, or trim them with reflective tape. Do the same with bags, shoes and other items. Seek flame resistant articles. Everyone should carry a flashlight.

Keep your porch light on and avoid allowing trick-or-treaters from entering your house for any reason. All participants, especially guardians, should be vigilant.

When driving, be aware that children can quickly run from seemingly nowhere into your path. Drive slower than usual, and if possible stay off of the roads during peek activity hours.

TUHSC Police Promotions!

Please join us in congratulating the following TUHSC Police Officers who have recently been promoted to Lieutenants and Sergeants from within our department. First in the patrol division our newly promoted Lieutenants are Darrack Dixon and Craig Robinson. Next in the Patrol Division Bryan Daigle, Derek Rankins, and Errol Peters have been promoted to Sergeant. In our Support Services Division, Crime Prevention section Roger Barnes has been promoted to Sergeant.

We also want to thank all of the applicants from the department that participated in this process.

Daylight savings time ends at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday November 2, 2008!

Turn your clocks back one hour!

Q and A

Daylight Savings

Time Ends!

Q: I am always reading about how I should check my smoke detector batteries when daylight savings time begins and ends. Is that really necessary?

A: What safety-minded sources are hoping is that you will take advantage of bi-yearly events, such as the beginning and ending of daylight savings time, to schedule a service of devices that require six month maintenance checks.

The actual safety message requests that you change your batteries during those time changes. The reason being that the detectors may have experienced lengthy or frequent activations you were not aware of, and that the batteries may have been exposed to drainage from use, exposure to moisture and other variables. Don't take a chance with this life safety device. Why not use the replaced batteries in a radio or toy that will not impact your family's well-being?

While you are replacing the batteries, go ahead and check the rest of the detector for wiring or structural damage. This includes using the test button to assure that what appears to be operational actually works.

You should retest once a month. Use a broom handle to push the test button, and avoid climbing, which could result in a fall.
