Work Place Thefts

Now that we are back from the holidays let us turn our attention back to the work place, and discuss theft prevention.

Fact

Thefts frequently occur during daylight hours when there are plenty of people about. Ask around your office and you will probably find one or more persons who experienced theft at a business place during working hours.

Security Measures You Can Take

Engrave items and keep their serial numbers on file.

Anchor or lock away all items, personal or business property. Hiding them won't do. Trust us on this one!

Take home personal items that you can at the end of your business day.

Report all thefts as soon as possible. Call 504-988-5531 . If you think your workplace is at risk call for a Crime Prevention Officer to visit you and make an assessment. It is a free service .

Items At Risk

Anything of perceived value to the thief.

That was a short and easy to remember list. However, take into account that the value and conceal-ability of the items will matter. The perpetrator typically wants to hide the item in a pocket or bag, but may carry something in plain view if it seems worth the risk. How many non–security service people actually question someone taking something out of a building?

Crime Prevention Definition

Thief: Anyone who is overcome by the temptation to take because of the opportunity we provide .

Securing Your Personal Property

As we always say, theft is a crime of opportunity. Most business hour thefts of personal property occur as a result of the victim simply not taking the time to lock a drawer or door . Thieves are counting on us to keep our purses, book bags and briefcases near a desk or on a chair instead of locked in the drawer. You do lock your drawers, don't you? What is convenient for us makes crime convenient for the thief.

Some of us practically lure the thief to our property by displaying it on top of our desks. Then we leave it as we go somewhere else. Some of us create even more opportunity when we fail to lock the door , if we even choose to close it. These simple procedures can mean so much.
